Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Crimea on the anniversary of its annexation from Ukraine. He left for Crimea unannounced on Saturday (March 18). Earlier, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Putin for war crimes in Ukraine.
The pro-Russian governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozaev, welcomed the Russian president. Putin also toured a new children’s center and art school. Russian officials described President Putin’s visit as an ’emergency visit’.
The country’s state media did not immediately broadcast any program of his visit.
Meanwhile, Russian President Putin has yet to publicly comment on the ICC’s action. His spokesman called it ‘ineffective’. He said, ‘Russia considers the questions raised by the ICC as ‘offensive and unacceptable’.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Putin’s government has controlled the region since eight years before the invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine says it will continue to fight to expel Russia from other territories, including Crimea.
