Remains of an ancient glacier have been found on Mars. As a result, it is understood that there is still some formation of water there. Humans are also expected to set foot on this red planet one day. News from CNN.
According to the report, a large part of the ice is no longer there. But scientists have discovered that glaciers once existed in the equatorial region of Mars. What accumulates there usually consists of light-colored sulfate salts.
The research team also observed crevasse fields or deep wedge-shaped openings formed inside the glacier.
These findings on Mars were recently announced at the 54th Lunar-Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.
Dr. Pascal Lee, senior planetary scientist at the SETI Institute and the Mars Institute, said in a statement, “What we found is not ice, but a pile of salt with the detailed morphological features of a glacier.” Basically, this salt is formed on top of glaciers.
Researchers estimate that the glacier was 3.7 miles or six kilometers long and 2.5 miles or 4 kilometers wide.
