Russia has supplied India with nearly $1,300 million worth of arms in the last five years. Moreover, it has ordered over $1 billion worth of arms and military equipment from Moscow. In a report on Sunday (March 12), the Russian state news agency Interfax reported this information.
According to the report, India is the largest buyer of Russian weapons in the world. India currently has 20 percent of the arms order placed by Moscow. After Russia, India buys the most arms from France. France supplies 29 percent of the country’s weapons. And only 11 percent of weapons come from the United States.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), between 2017 and 2022, Russian arms supply to India fell from 62 percent to 45 percent. However, India still buys the most arms from Russia.
Dmitry Shugaev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, said that India, China and some countries in Southeast Asia are interested in buying Russian weapons. Western countries, led by the US, are putting unprecedented pressure on India to criticize Russia’s ‘special operations’ in Ukraine. India still considers Russia as one of its major partners in terms of military-technical cooperation.

According to Interfax, arms exports from Russia to India are worth about $14 billion to $15 billion annually in recent years. Moreover, India’s total Russian arms orders have reached nearly $5 trillion.
According to Shugaev, Asian customers are particularly interested in buying Russia’s S-400 Triumph missile defense system, short-range missile systems such as Osa-Pechora or Strela, as well as Su-30 and MiG-29 fighter jets, helicopters and drones.

Another Russian official told Interfax on condition of anonymity that Moscow is currently developing the S-400 Triumph missile system for India and is preparing to deliver it on time.
About 200 samples of Russian weapons and military equipment were presented at the 14th International Space Exhibition in Bengaluru, India on Monday (March 13), Russia’s RKT state news agency Tass reported.

Meanwhile, while Western countries continue to impose sanctions on Russia one after the other, New Delhi has not explicitly condemned Russian aggression in Ukraine. Rather, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently called for dialogue and diplomatic measures to end the war.
