The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has stayed the non-bailable arrest warrant issued against Pakistan’s former prime minister and chairman of the opposition PTI Imran Khan. The High Court on Friday ordered to suspend this warrant till March 18.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq directed the Islamabad District and Sessions Court and the capital’s police to provide adequate security to the former prime minister.
Last week, a sessions court in Islamabad issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case. The arrest warrant was issued due to his persistent absence from the hearing of the case. Police went to Imran’s residence in Lahore on Sunday to arrest him. Earlier, PTI workers took a stand there. Later the police came back from there. The police went to Imran’s house twice on Tuesday and Wednesday. The police had to return two days after being blocked by PTI supporters. The Islamabad High Court had set a date for hearing on a petition seeking the cancellation of the lower court’s arrest warrant against Imran.
Imran’s lawyer Khawaja Haris submitted an affidavit for his client during the hearing on Friday. It said that the PTI chief will appear in court on March 18.
The court warned that Imran could face contempt of court proceedings if he violates the undertaking filed.
